The National Museum of Art of Catalonia - El Poble Espagnol
We will tour the National Museum of Art of Catalonia – El Poble Espangol, a "Spanish village," that was built in 1929, for the Barcelona International Exhibition. Nearby is the German Pavilion by Mies van der Rohe built for the same exhibition.
Today, re conceptualised as an open-air museum, it houses arts and craft exhibits, and is one of very few monuments from this era still open to the public. There are 15 distinct architectural styles in the village, each an example of a region of Spain; from Andalucía to the Balearic Islands, Madrid to Basque country.
The architects Ramon Reventós and Francesc Folguera, and the artists Xavier Nogués and Miquel Utrillo, visited 1600 towns and villages throughout the country during their research for the project. Today, there are some 40 workshops in operation, where visitors experience a wide range of arts and crafts, as well as having a tour of architectural Spain.
